AN NKT VOICE

WARNING: NKT supporters find this web site's essays and this web page distorted, not worth refuting (even though an NKT supporter web site has been set up to do just that), written by those filled with anger and negative views with poor reading comprehension, unreasonable, like talking to a brick wall and filled with negative, tabloid style rants and gossip... in short, everything on this web site is 100% wrong regardless of hundreds of quotes from Tsongkhapa and other Tibetan Lamas, respected doctrinal and academic texts, respectable media outlets, Kelsang Gyatso/NKT statements etc.

They say there are no reasoned arguments here (even though there has been a standing request for 2 years for anything NKT supporters believe is reasoned argument). Several essays here were written by NKT supporters. Moreover, most 'arguments' (literary, not verbal) presented here were derived or quoted from respected and substantial public sources, Kelsang Gyatso's/NKT's books (including A Great Deception and The Tibetan Situation Today), NKT supporter commentary in print and on the Internet (including several NKT support web sites) ... in short, many 'arguments' previously determined to be reasoned by NKT.

Allegedly, there are countless doctrinal errors in this web site (even though this is not a web site of Buddhist doctrine, for which we recommend source texts), providing only a single example....mislabelling an artistic image of the Medicine Buddha as Buddha Shakyamuni. So NKT-favored doctrine comes down to this, does it? Point conceded, and repaired.

A point of criticism has been made that we will not concede a point that we or one of our essayists were incorrect about. This is not true. Never was.

Things keep getting weirder in NKT's world.

NKT WORLD, this website - a collection of essays from various authors about the world of the NKT cult, personal tragedies from it and a plea for NKT to stop its ugly portrayal of the wonders of Buddhism, has perhaps arrived in the annals of NKT lore after nearly 2 years of this web site's existence. In the NKT mind, this web site is a villain.

This web site is now the sole subject of a web site supporting NKT's campaign and corporation. Perhaps NKT WORLD is the latest on the long list of NKT's targets for smear (eg, see here). Feverish new NKT cries of Nazi and liar, NKT's favorite epithets, can almost be heard. Certainly, derogatory Internet chatter from NKTites against this web site has peppered blogs for some time now. Perhaps NKT will bash this web site for preventing its 'religious' freedom as they have the Dalai Lama for 15 years.

Kelsang Gyatso awarded himself a Geshe degree, it was not awarded by any monastery

Review below comments from the monastery Kelsang Gyatso attended

(for those attempting to go to one of the web pages sited above, the author misspelled it; it is nktitesVSshugdenites.html; the summerfest.html essay may also be interesting)

(click on the image above to go to the new NKT web blog)

Aiming to discredit this web site, the 'NKT Truth Blog' announced May 31, 2010 a new thread, its top post these days,

"NKTWorld VS Reality: There is a new blog online tackling the website NKTWorld.org. The NKT World – Where there's smoke…there's arson! points out the many lies and misconceptions presented on NKTWorld.org."

(where there's smoke...there's arson; this certainly seems true for NKT's world; nothing known to be a lie appears on this web site, contrary to the libelous comment that there are many lies here; we expect comments like this to be retracted and not maliciously spread on the Internet even if some find them sporting, begging the question of whether NKT's lawyers do anything to dissuade them and as aggressively as they threaten litigation against who they call liars, or in effect are NKT's lawyers encouraging them?)

The NKT-defender web blog's core claim is 100% false,

"NKTWorld.org's real aim is merely to destroy people's faith by any means necessary."

(a claim of preventing religious freedom?)

(NKT should be permitted its idols and to worship them as it desires. NKT should allow others their religions and end tormenting its survivors.)

It also claims,

"I also doubt whether they can even read...countless misspellings...many egregious doctrinal mistakes and historical blunders...poorly written and poorly conceived material does not even merit a response"

But respond it does...with an entire dedicated web site (without merit).

Its author notes that he/she works at a print shop and printed out everything on this web site, amounting to 700 pages. Its author promises 10 blog posts that will address NKT WORLD over "the coming weeks and months." Still trying to digest that the blog's author thinks we can't read.

(The web site's author created several other NKT/Shugden web sites as well, see here)

It promises...

"As you will see in the coming weeks and months, not having a basic understanding of the tenets and history of Buddhism in general is also the basis for the endless misunderstandings and misrepresentations that detractors have and make concerning the New Kadampa Tradition."

(if by detractors the author means anyone who questions NKT, they number in the thousands based on the numbers of comments, books, articles, news stories and essays concerning NKT (see here for a sample); chastising comments from the Tibetan monastery discredited that NKT founder Kelsang Gyatso attended as well as many Tibetans are particularly candid)

It adds...

"Therefore, the actual nature of NKTWorld.org is that of a tabloid blog...besides the countless misspellings—how is it possible to make so many egregious doctrinal mistakes and historical blunders...One has to wonder, then, why such a 'fair and balanced' website has never issued any retractions, or if they ever will."

(in fact, many corrections have been made; there has yet been a request or credible reason to retract anything other than the listing of a pro-NKT blog as a resource for readers - the link was removed (a year later, that blog ended due to lack of interest); there has always been a standing invitation for credible information; we regret not correcting all the misspellings of our essayists; NKT WORLD is not a blog, the only tabloid material was generated by NKT; we know of nothing untrue on this web site other than material generated by NKT, NKT WORLD seeks accuracy)

In particular, the author claims that NKT WORLD essayists (and their training and resources, including hundreds of published books) are wrong in noting that,

* Buddhism is an endless journey

* Buddhism was created by a lay person named Shakyamuni

* Buddha Shakyamuni did not have a Teacher or Guru

* Buddha Shakyamuni was not a Buddhist.

* Atisha revitalized the nascent Tibetan Buddhism formulated by Padmasambhava

* The first Dalai Lama was the leader of the Gelug school

* Geshe Kelsang Gyatso does not have Buddha nature

Once again, an NKT voice wrongly insists that most everyone else is wrong, a theme of NKT propaganda. Buddha Shakyamuni was not a Buddhist. Buddhism evolved from his teachings deriving from his enlightenment, no one else's. Buddhism is indeed an infinite journey, hence it is an endless journey. Perhaps, the author claiming that these comments are false and creating another NKT-defense web site to say so would benefit from reading Buddhist and Tibetan history.

The author may want to revisit the comments of Kelsang Gyatso's teachers who are horrified by his campaign.

"These days, [in Kelsang Gyatso] the demonic cloud of overwhelming arrogance displays itself with a mass of deluded pride, like a bat who thinks he is above the sky…. This demon with broken commitments…. burns with the flame of unbearable spite towards the unsurpassed omniscient 14th Dalai Lama, the only staff of life of religious people in Tibet, whose activities and kindness are equal to the sky.

...Kelsang Gyatso who is today a pariah in the Tibetan community...

We advise him to accept the fact that he is an ordinary being and stand no chance whatsoever to challenge the Dalai Lama. He is not even a Geshe. The so called “third Buddha” is a figment of imagination conjured up by his fawning desciples as a propaganda tool to attract more people to his centre and that it should not go to his head.

Kelsang himself has transgressed the eight shortcomings of relying wrongly upon his own spiritual master H.H. The Dalai Lama. According to the circular released by the Sera Jhe Tsangpa Khangtsen, to whom Kelsang belonged, he had received both sutra and tantric teachings from H.H. The Dalai Lama when he was in Tibet. He had received the fifth Dalai Lama’s Lamrim Jampel Shalung at the Norbu Linka summer palace and the Kalachakra Initiation in 1956 from H.H.The Dalai Lama which incidently was the first Kalachakra initiation by the fourteenth Dalai Lama. As it were, there is simply no question of his not being a desciple of H.H. The Dalai Lama but he has ignored this aspect and launched a blistering attack on the Dalai Lama in the name of “religious persecution” along with his gullible followers. The outcome of all this attempt to denigrate the person of the of Dalai Lama by Kelsang clearly transgressed his spiritual relationship with the Dalai Lama and though he has mentioned in his letter that “all of us are destined to go to hell”, we are in no doubt that he will infact be the one who will land in hell.

We have therefore stripped him of his membership from our Sera Jhe Dratsang since the holy scriptures have clearly prescribed to evict such apostates who will foul the Sanga community’s spiritual purity and serenity and will have a negative influence for the whole community. Owing to the above reasons contained in the holy Tantric treatises, the Sera Jhe Dratsang’s Abbot and ex-abbots, Reincarnations of holy Lamas, Geshes, and the House Masters of the fifteen different Houses unanimously decided to strip Kelsang Gyatso of his membership in the Sera Jhe Dratsang and his own House had earlier done the same.

His venomous invectives against the Dalai Lama is unbecoming of a Buddhist...

In his apparent ecstasy, he even disowns being a Tibetan and works against the very people where he was born.

(referring to Gyatso)...Possessed by a terrible demon, without shame, embarrassment, or modesty, he doesn't have even the slightest care or concern for any of the commitments of the three vows [pratimoksha, bodhicitta, and tantric] which he undertook."

NKT WORLD's essayists are ridiculed as arsonists and amateurs. Interestingly, some of the essayists at NKT WORLD are NKTites.

The anti-NKT World web site's first counterpoint is dated May 28, 2010.

So far, these counterpoints have been published,

- there are many 'second' Buddhas and thus NKT's claim that Kelsang Gyatso is the third and only living Buddha is justified, elevating him further as a "founding Buddha"

- it is ok for NKT not to permit religious freedom

- NKT WORLD essayists are putting their own ignorance in Kelsang Gyatso's mouth

(the anti-NKT World web site claims in response that its author did not make these points and that all he/she was saying was "I only commented on a purported journalist's poor writing style and research ability." If indeed that is the case, we apologize. However, we found most of the commentary on that site went far beyond what the author now claims.)

OK. Let's stay tuned to their upcoming counterpoints. Let's learn what we can. Two anti-NKT WORLD blog posts published, 8 more to go over "the coming weeks and months." We look forward to learning what is wrong with this web site. If anything is shown credibly to be wrong, it will be noted on a web site page entitled Web Site Errors. We stand by our statement that there are no known lies here.

Although the author has been admonished for mistakenly putting NKT WORLD in the spotlight, he/she poignantly responded,

"I engage only because it sparks some wisdom within me which I otherwise wouldn't have uncovered, understanding that the goal is never to convince..."

We support the pursuit of wisdom. Perhaps this web site will inspire more. We hope so.

As always, we ask readers to think for themselves and arrive at their own conclusions. We suspect that viewers of NKT's protests, attacks, threats, pictures, videos, campaign web sites, politics and corporate life will question the prudence of participating with the NKT cult. Compared to NKT's own actions, this web site is trivial.

(We wonder what effect the widely reported instruction of Kelsang Gyatso had (several years ago, reportedly, he instructed his followers to discontinue their Internet 'pursuits').)

Editors Note:
We learned of this web site through the author's May 29, 2010 post on a blog known as 'Rattle That Cage' under the name Lhakpa Gyaltshen, who later reprinted this web page onto that blog, inducing this response,

"Thom, is it possible that you abstain from importing the horrors that are published out there about Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso and the New Kadampa Tradition?

I know that you put that specific long text because you are named there, as Lhakpa Gyaltsen, but still, it's too much, we don't need to give them more space in the web than the one they already take."

(horrifying this 2 year old web site is?)

The home page of 'Rattle That Cage' says,

"We promote and value HARMONY. Please do not post anything negative about any lamas, sects, deities or anyone."

(May 25, 2010, the author posted on the same blog regarding an upcoming book about NKT, whose litigation threats resulted in the book's author to cancel publication to save his family's future and the reflex name calling from NKTites of Nazism, "Where there's smoke...there's arson." This is the same line used in the anti-NKT WORLD blog's title. The title of the derailed book - 'A Cuckoo in the Peacock Palace: The Decline of Tradition in 21st Century Western Buddhism and the Rise of the New Kadampa Tradition'.)

This information may or may not be relevant, here (it may or may not be about the author). If it is, we understand from where the author is coming. Frankly, reviewing the author's 10 web sites promoting NKT's campaign and business plan is enlightening.

This comment appears to be from the blog's author (though it may not)...

"I'm with Thom on this one. I need to say 'liar', 'fraud', 'cheat' and 'hypocrite' to protect Je Tsongkhapa's tradition from being destroyed, I'll do it and face the consequences. They are all expressions of truth and valid descriptions as Emptymountains has shown. They are valid descriptions of conventional reality.

I don't believe that the Dalai Lama can be stopped simply by pointing out the inconsistencies in his actions and words. I understand that the power of the Dalai Lama's speech has to be completely destroyed. Many people believe him simply because of who he is. They have faith that he is a holy being because that's how he appears, wearing Je Tsongkhapa's robes, and so they follow his view. This has to stop because the Dalai Lama is NOT a holy being (can Avalokiteshvara cause suffering to millions?) but a self-serving politician who is using the Buddhadharma for his own power and reputation. if you have any doubt, please read 'A Great Deception'. All your doubts will be removed.

The only way to destroy the power of the Dalai Lama's speech is to show him as he really is – to shine the light of wisdom on him and tell things as they really are. Liar, hypocrite, fraud and cheat are perfect descriptions. I'm not afraid to tell the truth. I admit that using these words is a double-edged sword because of the misconceptions that people have about Buddhism, thinking you have to speak nice words all the time otherwise you're a bad Buddhist. It is an important question whether the use of such words is skilful means or not, but my doubts are removed because these are words that our own Teachers (Gelugpa Lamas) who compiled 'A Great Deception' have used. The truth is more important than opinions and judgements. If we're 'nice' but Je Tsongkhapa's tradition disappears from this world because we weren't wise or brave enough to use strong, wrathful actions, it will be a disaster and a tragedy. Right now, only we stand in the way of this happening. We must act as an offering to our Gurus to protect the precious doctrine that Buddha and many others gave their lives for many times. This is our offering to our Gurus and all sentient beings – to try to remove political pollution from Buddhism by showing the institution of the Dalai Lama to be flawed and deceptive because it mixes religion and politics."

(Gelugpa Lamas compiled NKT's book, 'A Great Deception', for which the author created a web site! Hope they come out of NKT's closet someday and we get to find out who they are.)

'Thom', 'emptymountains', 'dharmaprotector', 'Wisdom Moon', and 'Protectors Champion' appear to be other names used by Lhakpa Gyaltshen, who linked the name Lhakpa Gyaltshen with Shugden in the following comment...

"The Dalia Lama only Persecutes One of the Thousand Mahayanna Dieties. He Persecutes the Only Diety that Ties him to the assasination of a Wisdom Buddha Lhakpa Gyaltsen shortly before he seized Absolute Power ove the Tibertan as Supreme Dictator. He subjugated his own People as Serfs, Indentured Servants and Slaves until 1959. He could have liberated his People hundreds of years earlier. Instead 95% lived as Chattel and mutilations for punishments. Now People work for wages, received Health and Education from the Government and are governed by a Democratic Constitution with all the laws and protections we enjoy in the West. He is the one who accepted money for a million Patriots to die for his Kingdom. What kind of Lama does this to others. None. Not one. It is impossible for a Practincing Buddhist to do such a thing. Let alone a Buddha of Compassion!

(misspellings as they appeared in the original post)

(The Dalai Lama became the Dalai Lama in 1937 when he was 2 years old. Tibet was invaded by Maoist China in1950 when he was 15. He ultimately fled Tibet in 1959 when he was 25. Most of the time he is blamed for 'subjugating' Tibetans, he was an infant, child and teenager. Evern wackier, it is claimed that he could have liberated Tibetans hundreds of years earlier than his birth. By the way, note the spelling in the above quote.)

What's this, the wrath of Shugden now poised to strike NKT WORLD? Will NKT's protest rallies begin again, this time against NKT WORLD?

nkt

Protesting NKT 'clergy' dressed up like Tibetan monks and nuns against an actual Tibetan monk, the Dalai Lama - recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace and respected by Buddhists, Tibetans, theologians, scholars, social leaders, publishers and journalists around the world

The author has the audacity to call this web site, nktworld.org, misrepresentative, mistaken, blundering, ignorant, biased, prejudiced, lie spreading, a tabloid written by amateurs and spiritual arson with nothing but shock value. Other than the comments of NKT supporters, this web site's commentaries are representative of consensus views about NKT, its politics, its business practices, its distortions of Buddhism and the Dalai Lama, and its cultish drive.

Someone commenting about the new pro-NKT web site wrote,

"most telling the difference between NKT and the Dalai Lama. Facing criticism, NKT raises fists and screams into megaphones, the Dalai Lama chuckles."

1996/1997, NKT was the loudest voice (and still is) in a disturbing Shugden hysteria. An April 28, 1997 article in Newsweek referred to Shugdenites as the Taliban of Buddhism.

Newsweek commented,

"in 1991, a senior monk named Kelsang Gyatso established a new Dorje Shugden order based in England and called the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) The NKT soon flourished by promising spiritual rewards for cash - an unholy sales pitch that helped trigger confrontation with the Dalai Lama's circle.

the followers of the NKT have painted a hostile portrait of the Dalai Lama that is unrecognizable to mainstream Buddhists - indeed, to millions around the world who revere the Nobel Peace Prize winner and champion of Tibet.

Shugden followers always believed their god could grant earthly favors, and NKT has richly exploited this belief. Though barely known in the East, the NKT has slickly and successfully promoted Dorje Shugden in Europe. It's the fastest growing Buddhist sect in Britain.

It has also been denounced by the London press and the Dalai Lama as a cult that fleeces its own followers. "Nobody would pray to Buddha for better business, but they go to Shugden for such favors - and this is where it has become like spirit worship," the Dalai Lama told NEWSWEEK. "This is a great pity - a tragedy."

The occasion for the Newsweek article was the February 1997 brutal murders of 3 monks close to the Dalai Lama. Newsweek's article also covered the lead role of NKT's animated campaign against the Dalai Lama.

M1M2
M3

According to Newsweek,

"Each victim had been stabbed 15 to 20 times, leaving the walls of the small monk's chamber splattered with blood.

Indian police believe the murders were committed by an obscure Buddhist sect that takes its name and inspiration from a minor but ferocious Tibetan deity: the Dorje Shugden. The Shugdens consider themselves guardians of Tibetan Buddhism, and particularly their branch of the faith, known as Gelugs..."

(We prefer to think that these murders were an unintended consequence of NKT's furor and had no direct connection with NKT.)

According to Mike Wilson writing for the Association for Religion and Intellectual life the Spring of 1999,

"The Shugden movement is organized around Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a Gelugpa monk who founded The New Kadampa Tradition in 1991 and set himself up as head of it in London...Kelsang is challenging the Dalai Lama's moral authority on the international stage."

However, again from Newsweek,

"NKT founder Kelsang has publicly retreated from his confrontation with the Dalai Lama. Through his spokesman he told NEWSWEEK that the NKT had abandoned its demonstrations last July alter realizing they were less and less appropriate."

(this has turned out to be false; NKT protests against the Dalai Lama continued, reaching another crescendo 2008/2009; new NKT Internet attacks appear daily)

May 5, 1997, Newsweek reprinted Kelsang Gyatso's letter to it,

"my name is Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Since July of last year NKT people, including myself, have remained peacefully without any further involvement in the Dorje Shugden controversy.

(again, this has turned out to be false, just as his self given Geshe degree)

We received messages from many people, including some Tibetans in London, thanking us for leaving the controversy in peace and indicating their appreciation.

We simply practise our own religion, as passed down through many generations."

(even though NKT's brand and style of religion, a unique and confrontational Westernized Shugdenism (used to purchase hotels, spas, apartments, restaurants and business conference venues), began in 1991)

Somehow, NKT supporters find such information unreasonable, even false (certainly, Kelsang Gyatso's assurances of abandoning Shugden protest rallies were false).

We are even being attacked for not responding to a comment published on the anti-NKT WORLD web site criticizing the author of that web site for criticizing this web site,

"Spoken like a true cult member!

I thought Buddhists weren't supposed to care about reputation?! And why call the other site "poorly written and poorly conceived" and pick on the "egregious misspellings"? These are very harsh words coming from a so-called Buddhist. To resort to this kind of petty attack screams of ego and self-cherishing.

Good luck on your "journey"!"

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Just what don't we, most of our essayists and consensus opinion about NKT get?

Or do NKT supporters live in a dark place without enough light to see anything?

NOTE: We see a large difference between Kelsang Gyatso's books and NKT's actions.

His books are largely straightforward presentations of Tibetan Buddhism, though NKT denies any connection with Tibetan Buddhism, even though NKT claims to live by the wondrous teachings of Tsongkhapa, a most eminent Tibetan Buddhist. After all, Kelsang Gyatso was a Tibetan Buddhist before he wasn't.

We have little debate with Kelsang Gyatso's Buddhism books. We disagree with the portrait presented to the public by NKT's protest rallies, Internet attacks, clergy and member abuse, scandals, two recent political manifestos and demands to interfere with Tibetan Buddhism and Tibet.

We do not agree based on the evidence and even NKT's 2-decade-long campaign against him that the Dalai Lama is horrible, bogus, wrongly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, a Nazi, a CIA puppet and a liar as NKT insists. Contrary to the Shugdenite lawsuit against him trumpeted by NKT, the Supreme Court in India didn't think so either.

Like about 100,000 Tibetans, the Dalai Lama lives in exile from his homeland where the Dalai Lama legacy has no authority since its Communist takeover during the 1950s when he was in his twenties. Since then, he has worked more than most, or maybe anyone else, to spread the profound ideals of Buddhism around the world and is respected around the world by hundreds of millions of us.

NKT's obsession with the Tibetan Shugden matter which goes back 350 years has no relevance whatsoever to NKT, which is not subject in anyway to Tibetan Shugden policy and the views of any of the 14 Dalai Lamas.

NKT is free to worship its Westernized Shugden and disregard Shakyamuni's teachings, though we wish they would keep it private.

NKT's vile Internet chatter and attacks against its survivors help no one. Its litigation threat tactic is misdirected.

Some of us used to be NKT regulars and contributed many thousands of dollars and substantial labor, but left because of its politics and hate.

All we can recommend to NKT supporteres is to read, if nothing else, Kelsang Gyatso's books on Buddhism. We have, many times. This would offer them a beginning to a beneficial future.

We regret that many NKT supporters will find these sentiments as they did the Welcome Message on our home page - unreasonable, filled with rants, poorly written and conceived, misinformed, incompetent and spiritual arson.

May love and compassion prevail in all of our individual and collective journeys.
