Shugdenites, most loudly represented by NKT, especially in the West, often claim that they do not support the Chinese invasion of Tibet or China's policy to rid Tibet of its historical Buddhist culture and replace it with China's version of leadership.
As usual, the facts do not support Shugdenites. For example, this recent note was published by a vocal Shugdenite September 6, 2009...
"China sanctioned Panchen Lama is 19 years old now. He is taking on his role of Tibet’s Highest Lama within Tibet/China more and more. The Chinese Government although saying they are Socialist and do not believe in any religion, still backs up the highest ranking lama within Tibet. Panchen Lama is endorsed by the Central Government of Beijing and all his expenses borne by them also. He has State ranking.
Whether we accept this as the authentic Panchen Lama or not is not the issue here. If he grows up to serve the proliferation of BuddhaDharma, then it will bring many people to Buddhism in China itself. China is supporting the practice and spread of Dorje Shugden’s lineage within China and Tibet itself. No one can stop that. Not the Dalai Lama, not his exile government, not the various scattered Dharma centers of the four schools of Buddhism throughout the world. Eventually their protests of Dorje Shugden will be tantamount to protesting against one of the policies of the Chinese Government. They will not take lightly to that."
Additionally, according to Kundeling Rinpoche, who is suing The Dalai Lama and the Government in India over Shugden (a lawsuit endorsed by NKT),
"I approve the Chinese presence in Tibet. What we are living with the Dalai Lama today shows how authoritarian his theocratic regime must have been in the past. It was much more violent than what Tibetans are living today under Chinese rule...If we had to live with him (The Dalai Lama), we could have possibly been crucified." (note: the time which Kundeling refers during which there were violent times in Tibet refers to the 1950s, the decade of Tibet's invasion of the Chinese Government; Kundeling, on behalf of Shugdenites like NKT, prefer a Tibet subdued by Chinese Government's cultural genocide in Tibet and prefer a communist culture rather than a Tibetan culture)
Who is the real Panchen Lama? What is Shugden's role? The answers depend on how one views the communist Chinese takeover of Tibet and its campaign to rid Tibet of the Dalai Lama.
We know that NKT endorses Shugdenism and protests around the world for this 'spirit's' protection.
"The Panchen Lama is the second highest ranking Lama after the Dalai Lama in the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism (the sect which controlled western Tibet from the 16th century until the establishment of Chinese sovereignty in 1951). The successive Panchen lamas form a tulku reincarnation lineage which are said to be the incarnations of Amitabha Buddha. The name, meaning "great scholar", is a Tibetan contraction of the Sanskrit paṇḍita (scholar) and the Tibetan chenpo (great). The Panchen Lama bears part of the responsibility for finding the incarnation of the Dalai Lama and vice versa." (Wikipedia) (he first Panchen Lama, 1385-1438)
"The Chinese takeover of Tibet eventually drove the Dalai Lama into exile in India in 1959. The Panchen Lama, however, remained in Tibet to try to intercede with the Chinese government on behalf of his people. At first he was seen as a collaborator with the Chinese. In fact, at great risk to himself he criticized Chinese atrocities in Tibet. He spent more than a decade either in prison or under house arrest. His sudden death at the age of 50 was never investigated or explained. On May 14, 1995, the Dalai Lama identified a six-year-old boy named Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama. By May 17 the boy and his parents had been taken into Chinese custody. They have not been seen or heard from since. The Chinese government named another boy, Gyaltsen Norbu, as the official 11th Panchen Lama and had him enthroned in November 1995." (Barbara O'Brien) (The Chinese Government, contradicting the process employed by Tibetan Buddhists for hundreds of years, defined in 1995 Tibet's highest Lama to propogate Shugden worship in China.)
According to the Chinese Government, this is the Panchen Lama (notice Shugden thanga behind the boy, now 19 years old):
Chinese Government kidnapped Tibet's real Panchen Lama and his family in 1995 (at age 6 and the 10th reincarnation of the first Panchen Lama, 1385-1438, Tibet's Panchen Lama became the world's youngest political prisoner).
From Free Tibet,
"China stole a boy...
it's time they gave back the man
In May 1995, Chinese occupying forces abducted the six year-old Panchen Lama from his home in Tibet. No one there has seen or heard from him since. His abduction was a crime not only against an innocent child, but against the Tibetan nation and its way of life."
