At NKT, celebration stirs.
NKT appears to have suspended its protest rallies against the Dalai Lama around the world. Could it be NKT ran out of money or they are regrouping for a new assault? Or could it be that NKT is busy counting the money?
While NKT professes that it is not a form of Tibetan Buddhism and that Tibetan Buddhism has been corrupted by Tibetan Buddhists, NKT proclaims that it is the savior of the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (regardless of the view of Tibetan Gelupa Buddhists). That's right, logic and common sense have little place in NKT.
About its mostly quiet status these days NKT has proclaimed victory, mission accomplished against mainstream Buddhism in its ardent defense and protection of Shugden.
"The Tide has Turned - Gelugpa Tradition Revival in the East and the West:
Homage to Guru Protector Dorje Shugden!
Since the Western Shugden Society (aka NKT) demonstrated against the Dalai Lama's ban on the practice of Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden last year, much has happened that is a cause for rejoicing...although the WSS made many requests to the Dalai Lama requesting him to stop, he never replied... Now the problems they were addressing have stopped...developments on various fronts also show how necessary and effective this expression of free speech in Western society was in terms of showing support and thereby increasing the confidence of sincere practitioners in India and elsewhere. They have heralded a revival of Dorje Shugden practice throughout the world...As the world media spotlight is never far away, the Dalai Lama and his followers are forced to be more cautious...The court case against the Dalai Lama and Samdhong Rinpoche wends its way through the Delhi High Court, to be heard in September. Whatever the outcome, it is at least being taken seriously..."
NKT is proud of the Ganden Tripa, a Tibetan Buddhist, (never mind that he does not support Shugdenism) for recognizing the Tibetan Buddhist Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche (never mind he does not promote Shugdenism, click here for a relevant essay) as a representative the the Tibetan Buddhist Gelug Tradition (which NKT sees as corrupt). NKT spins this story as official Tibetan Buddhist sanction for the worship of NKT's main deity, Shugden. Of course, it is not.
Finally, NKT embraces, however, 2 new Shugden friendly monasteries in India at which 900 monks can cuddle Shugden. According to NKT, "they are working extremely hard and effectively, just as Dorje Shugden practitioners once upon a time worked hard to build the Tibetan community in exile after 1959...It seems as though the pure Gelugpas have broken away forever from Tibetan politics, both in the West and in the East." (a previous essayist presented here several months ago information about these new monasteries, click here)
According to NKT, "There seems to be a revival of Dorje Shugden practice...the New Kadampa Tradition also flourishes, with over 1100 Centers and branches...Dorje Shugden's practice is growing like his statues...eople from all around the world are ordering more and more Dorje Shugden statues...Last but not least, next week in England between 4000 and 5000 Western Buddhists, more than ever before, will receive a Dorje Shugden empowerment and Lamrim teachings from Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso at the UK Kadampa Meditation Centre. For his entire life, Geshe Kelsang has fearlessly practiced, preserved, and promoted the pure Gelugpa tradition of Je Tsongkhapa...All in all, it is proving impossible to stamp out this great tradition. Dorje Shugden's time has come!"
(Everyone is welcome except those banned by NKT to NKT's alluring and provacative tantra for newcomers and children too)
NKT's festival will probably raise over $100,000 for NKT's charities (motels, spas, restaurants, government-subsidized apartments, business meeting venue rental, book publisher, statue maker, etc) from its overflowing festival, about which NKT notes, "Due to the very large numbers of bookings we have received for the 2009 International Summer Festival the seating in the main Temple is now full for the peak days of Week Two of the Festival. Therefore we have now made additional seating available for these days with a video link to the teachings. All bookings received before 3 June 2009 are booked for Temple seating throughout the Festival. Bookings received from 3 June 2009 will be booked for video link seating for the peak days of Week Two."
At least NKT is less militant these days. For this, we should celebrate.
