Sexual abuse inside NKT has been widely reported.
So has NKT's political use of Shugden against Tibetan Buddhism and the Dalai Lama.
So has NKT's abuse of its followers in other ways.
This interview with Stephen Batchelor helps to explain. Long traditions in Tibet do not always constructively translate to the western world. Click here
NKT is not alone in the abuse of granting its teachers and leaders excessive influence over students. Unfortunately, a Google search for 'buddhism controvery' yields over 500,000 results (NKT mentions predominate).
NKT takes us further than sexual abuse and other notorious Buddhist cults. NKT takes us into political battles, hate campaigns, excessive financial and labor contributions, Internet slamming and loss of spirituality with substantial taxpayer subsidy...fundamentally in the same way, teaching over-reliance on worship of Kelsang Gyatso and his exported version of Shugden.
We must be careful, especially since NKT teachers and leaders have too little training to go along with too much power. And, NKT bans any teachers and teachings not authored by its founder, Kelsang Gyatso.
Buddhism has profound offerings, but in the hands of ego and marketers has been infected.
