I have a question.
Which Shugden story, if any, is true?
Some stories say that Shugden has reincarnated and is now living both as someone several decades old and as a young boy.
Some stories say that Shugden lived long before Tsongkhapa and reincarnated many times. There is even a story that Tsongkhapa was Shugden.
Some stories say that Shugden thrived on human blood and corpses.
Shugden stories range from Shugden being the highest god to Shugden being a demon invoked for murder (eg, police have concluded that Shugdenites murdered 3 close associates of the Dalai Lama).
The latest story (from a Chinese video produced by the monastery carrying his name) says that Denma Gonsa Rinpoche says via his monastery that Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) invited many to become a Dharma protector that was needed to spread Tsongkhapa's sect renowned for strict rules and discipline in degenerate times, and that a monk among 8 disciples named Zaba volunteered to become the protector of the Gelugpa lineage.
(Denma Gonsa Rinpoche predicted that his own reincarnation would be identified as a young boy who could recite the entire root text of Guhyasamaja spontaneously; reportedly, this prediction has recently been fulfilled.)
According to Denma Gonsa Rinpoche's monastery,
"This is how Dharmapala Dorje Shugden made his first vow to become the protector...The origin of this Dharmapala is traced back to his vow to protect the Gelugpa lineage...The reason he is being regarded as the one and only protector of the Gelugpas...are all part of a true history...After taking his first vow with Je Tsongkhapa, the Gelugpa's principle Dharmapala was installed as the official protector during the reign of the 5th Dalai Lama...From then on, every incarnation of the Dalai Lama, most incarnations of Panchen Lama, all incarnations of Pabongkha Rinpoche, all reincarnations of Trijang Rinpoche, and especially enlightened beings who emerged during these degenerate times, embodied the complete teachings of Gelugpa lineage...you who possess power beyond the gods of the three realms, please grant this monastery all success!"
(power beyond the gods!)
Thus, before Tsongkhapa, Shugden was NOT a purported Dharma protector. Interestingly, 'degenerate times' have lasted several hundred years. Even more interestingly, every incarnation of the Dalai Lama since the 5th, including the current 14th Dalai Lama, embody the complete teachings of the Gelugpa lineage - while NKT claims that the Dalai Lamas, particularly the current Dalai Lama, as well as the present-day Gelugpa sect is corrupt and degenerate.
Denma Gonsa Rinpoche monastery continued,
"Dharmapala Dorje Shugden was unhappy with the 5th Dalai Lama's practice (1600s) and threatened him using a variety of magic practices on him. After numerous failed attempts to subdue him, the 5th Dalai Lama turned to Sakya Rinpoche to perform rites on him. During the rites, dice that were thrown bounced back with and they found many bad omens and signs. They tried different ways but still failed to subdue the protector...This story between humans and the divine is both beautiful and breathtaking...Dharmapala Dorje Shugden is...king of all dharmapalas."
After searching for many years, I can find no teaching of Tsongkhapa that mentions Shugden, or that Tsongkhapa changed his reliance from prior Dharma protectors to Shugden. Furthermore, I can find no mention of Shugden before the early 1900s. Nor any information about 'Zaba', purported disciple of Tsongkhapa who became Shugden.
Exasperated, I can find nothing true or beyond alternative theories about Shugden.
Can anyone help?
