NKT - ODDS AND ENDS

NKTgod

Summer 2009 was relatively quiet for NKT 's politics. NKT seemed busy with its summer fair and last-chance mass tantra empowerment to thousands tricked by NKT's slick promise of nirvana, some with their children, from Kelsang Gyatso, who was supposed to retire in August and leave the NKT empire in the hands of Kelsang Khyenrab as NKT's new 'spiritual leader' and only the second in this alleged 'tradition'. (As of November, no word about any retirement of NKT's alleged Buddha.)

g

While NKT's public demonstrations commanded by Kelsang Gyatso against Tibetan Buddhism around the world subsided, NKT retooled its Internet web sites and theology.

It has become clear that NKT's theology consists of 3 parts.

First, NKT has anointed itself the chief protector of the ghostly, warring entity known in Tibet as Shugden, invoked to harm disbelievers in the supremacy of an egocentric Tibetan sect. Shugden is pictured above and featured in a recent NKT video on youtube (a repository of dozens of NKT propaganda videos). According to Kelsang Gyatso and NKT-published 'lineages', Kelsang Gyatso is the only living descendant of Shugden.

This video shows us all what NKT wants westerners to be in order to be held in NKT's esteem. Otherwise, suffer NKT riducule, Internet attacks and protests.

Tsonghkapa, the Tibetan lama whose teachings Kelsang Gyatso and NKT profess are the most holy teachings ever and form the fundamental substance of their new 'tradition', never recognized, worshiped, endorsed or promoted Shugdenism. Outside Tibet and outside the NKT cult, Shugden, probably the most feared deamon in Tibet, has little meaning. For hundreds of millions of Buddhists and billions of others around the world, Shugden has no relevance.

NKT's preoccupation with Tibetan Buddhism is odd, because NKT makes clear that it is not associated with Tibetan Buddhism and finds it corrupt and a degenerate form of Buddhism. It is as if NKT is schizophrenic....at war with Tibet and its people while simultaneously borrowing exlusively from a controversial and sometimes violent sectarian view of Tibetan Kadampa Buddhism to create NKT's new 'tradition'.

According to NKT,

"Although the lineage Gurus of the NKT from Je Tsongkhapa up to Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso are Tibetan Lamas, the NKT is not Tibetan Buddhism...it became a legally independent Buddhist tradition. The main reason why NKT-IKBU has chosen to become legally registered as an independent Buddhist tradition is because it was recognized that in Tibetan Buddhism there are so many political problems. These problems are due to the mixing of Dharma and politics, with higher Lamas using the holy Dharma of Buddha’s teachings for political aims."

Of course, NKT's smears of Tibetan Buddhism are baseless NKT allegations. By any traditional definition, NKT has no lineage gurus. Certainly, NKT's tradition has no predecessor. It began as a business entity of Kelsang Gyatso to develop real estate, spas, hotels, apartments etc. Furthermore, Kelsang Gyatso's so called geshe degree, a Tibetan academic degree, is essentially fake. He was never awarded such a degree no matter how much he professes to be a product of Tibetan training (while he since considers it a pariah).

Nevertheless, in Tibet, as in most eastern and mid eastern countries, religion and politics have been interwoven for hundreds of years. Arguably, similar interweaving occurs in western nations as well. In fact, the list of countries that separate theology from temporal leadership is at best very short. Does NKT wish to overthrow the world? Furthermore, it is virtually impossible to deny that NKT itself has merged religion and politics. Just about anything released from NKT's de facto political arm, the Western Shugden Society, is filled with political extremism.

Also odd, NKT relies on political speeches for its weird anti-political rationale using this youtube video. A major point made by this video, contrary to NKT's notion, is that politicians can sometimes do good things.

For one of NKT's beautifully redesigned web sites presenting NKT's Shugdenism, see www.dharmaprotector.org, wherein NKT presents its version of the 3 jewels of Buddhism: Buddha (Tshonghkapa), Dharma (Lamrim Meditation) and Sangha (Shugden).

According to a prominent NKTite,

"Why else would the 5th Dalai Lama feel that Dorje Shugden was against the ‘Ganden Podrang’? Because the TGIE is the unholy union of Dharma and politics created by the ‘Great Fifth’ and a cause for the degeneration of the Dharma, something that Dorje Shugden is completely opposed to."

NOTE: The fifth Dalai Lama died in 1682. The Tibetan Government in Exile (TGIE) began in India, with its kindness, in 1959, when the Dalai Lama escaped the Chinese invasion and overthrow of Tibet. Thus, once again, an attempt to mislead. For hundreds of years, the succession of 14 Dalai Lamas has personified the unique Tibetan merging of temporal and spiritual leadership, which was supported by Kelsang Gyatso's teachers for whom he professes so much pride and from whom he professes so much teaching. There is nothing new here. Tibetans, notably including the leaders and members of the Tibetan monastery were Kelsang Gyatso received his incompleted Geshe training (see footnote below), revere the Dalai Lama as their state and religious leader and are upset with NKT's vitriolic attacks against him. Again, as NKT professes, NKT is neither a Tibetan tradition nor a form of Tibetan spirituality. Also, the politicians relied upon by NKT, shown above, often link(ed) religion with their temporal leadership.

Second, NKT is focused on degrading the history of the Dalai Lama's in Tibet, and particularly the current Dalai Lama, the 14th.

While, according to NKT,

"The Fourteenth Dalai Lama is regarded by his followers to be:

1) an authentic and pure lineage holder of the teachings of Buddha;

2) a propagator of Buddhism;

3) the political leader and advocate of the Tibetan people, representing their best interests;

4) a manifestation of the Buddha of Compassion Avalokiteshvara (Tib. Chenrazig);

5) a reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama, who in turn was a reincarnation of the Dalai Lama previous to him, and so forth – an unbroken lineage of fourteen successive reincarnations of the same person."

(governments, universities, publishers, libraries, religious figures, media and hundreds of millions around the world consider the Dalai Lama a holy religious leader, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1989, he tours almost continuously to discuss Buddhism, compassion and Tibet)

...NKT writes that,

"Though a stellar reputation precedes him everywhere he goes...It will become clear that the Dalai Lama has a sinister side that is rarely noticed or is deliberately ignored...The Dali Lama cannot be an authentic and pure lineage holder of Buddhist teachings...He is confused as to the basic understanding of Buddha’s teachings on the law of cause and effect...The Dalai Lama is the most famous Buddhist in the world but he has no real intention of propagating Buddhism...The Dalai Lama cannot be the Buddha of Compassion...it is the Dalai Lama and majority of his followers who are the ones who have claimed that he is the manifestation of a faultless enlightened being...The Dalai Lama has an anger problem, an attachment problem, and by extension an ignorance problem. These deluded minds preclude the possibility of successive reincarnations, therefore the fourteen Dalai Lamas cannot be the same person...The purpose of exposing the Dalai Lama’s deception is not to induce hatred toward him but to show that the institution of the Dalai Lamas is heretical and is destroying Buddhism...He is therefore completely unreliable as a spiritual leader...Buddhists would be wise to conclude that no matter what profound or beautiful things he may say, there is no reasonable basis in which he should be regarded as an actual Buddhist practitioner. With a role for every occasion – holy man, politician, international statesman, simple monk, pop icon, Buddhist Pope, socialist, movie star, autocrat, democrat, Marxist, humanitarian, environmentalist, Nobel Peace prize winner, nationalist, Buddha of Compassion, communist, God-King – the Dalai Lama weaves a complex web of religion and politics that entraps his audiences wherever he goes. Nobody has ever seen anything like it. People are easily swayed by the historical mystique of Tibet and its ‘God-King’, and feel captivated and convinced by his charm. After fifty years, we do not see in this Dalai Lama a ‘God-King’, a saviour, or even a wise statesman skilfully shaping the destiny of his country and its people through a difficult time. What we see instead is a desperate and cynically self-seeking man who has precipitated the greatest catastrophe in Tibetan history."

Wow, take that Dalai Lama, the Tibetan people and the bilions of us who do not see the evil behind the Dalai Lama that so inspires NKT.

Perhaps, what more could be expected from an organization (NKT) that attaches the prestigious Geshe title to Kelsang Gyatso even though he never earned it and that has created foolhearty trivial requirements for its monks and nuns having little to do with conventional standards in Buddhism the past 2,500 years.

Amazingly, NKT is widely circulating that the Dalai Lama was found guilty of crimes by the high court in India in October 2009. However, there has been no media reporting of this alleged guilty verdict and there appears to be no court record of it either. Yet another odd claim of NKT, because a guilty verdict against one of the most recognized and respected individuals on earth would surely be international news of the highest order if true.

About this inflammatory NKT report....the office of the Dalai Lama responded,

"For your information, the report published by the so-called Western Shugden Society in their website regarding His Holiness' court case was baseless and false. The case is still in process in Delhi High Court."

Third, NKT is largely a global profitable business empire - relying on government subsidies and charitable donations - owning and markteting spas, hotels, business venue rentals, apartments, book publishing, CD/DVD sales and festivals. NKT centers often hold 'center cherishing days' to raise money, in part to fund NKT's political agenda.

Coming soon from NKT....a new retail book, adding to its free The Tibetan Situation Today, entitled The Great Deception - persecution, corruption, dictatorship, betrayal...(said to be available January 1, 2010).

deception

According to NKT,

"This is a true story revealing the hidden side to the celebrity Nobel Peace Prize winner – the Dalai Lama.

Using ground-breaking research, this book looks behind the saintly image to expose the real Dalai Lama; a religious and political dictator, who is responsible for persecuting not only his own people, but millions of people around the World.

We owe it to those, whose suffering goes on unnoticed to look behind the Hollywood glamour of the smiling monk..."

Virtually all native Tibetans revere and hold allegience to the Dalai Lama. It is not clear who these persecuted millions around the world outside of Tibet are. Other than NKT and China, which have no reverence for or allegiance to the Dalai Lama whatsoever, there are virtually no Shugdenites. Certainly, neither NKT nor China can claim to be persecuted by the Dalai Lama. At best, NKT is comprised of several thousand attendees, most of whom have no idea of NKT's corporate campaign against the Dalai Lama. Also, neither NKT nor China answer to the vast majority of Tibetan Buddhists who do not worship NKT's god Shugden.

Note the book's cover mention of 'The Ruling Lama's Policies'. Contrary to NKT rhetoric, NKT clearly has a political agenda.

A Shugden movie is in progress as well, entitled Dorje Shugden: On the Trail of a Buddhist Protector, which will feature Tibet, its history, its Dalai Lamas, its monasteries, and, of course, substantial Shugden folklore.

And, NKT is expanding in another new direction - health care chaplaincy. NKT intends to train and deploy 'chaplains' to "offer bedside visiting...and a variety of meditation sessions for both staff and patients to help bring a more peaceful, calm and positive approach in the face of adversity."

2010, a good year for NKT business, anti-Dalai Lama quagmire and Shugden protection?

If only NKT would not interfere with and defame Buddhism, the Tibetan people and the life and teachings of Tsongkhapa.

Other than Kelsang Gyatso's patronizing books, which present only a small selection of Kadampa principles blended with folklore superstitions, little of NKT's purpose and practice reflects authentic Buddhism or kindness. In the end, NKT is a business selling scandal wrapped in art and feel-good piety.

True spirituality is not merely a marketed product, it must be practiced to be real and beneficial for all of us.

Footnote:
View from Sera Je Monastery...

"His Holiness The Dalai Lama is the undisputed leader of the six million Tibetans and a world renowned Buddhist leader as well as a respected statesman of great charisma for which he was awarded the prestigious 1989 Nobel Peace Prize among many others. His genuine concern for the welfare of the Tibetan people, the weak and the down trodden and his teachings on compassion to bring about a more humane and harmonious world and his call for the protection of all forms of life on our planet and their habitat in the form of what he termed as ‘Universal Responsibility’ has caught the imagination of the world and is held in great esteem by virtually the whole world irrespective of their religious affiliations or political ideology.

However, it is a measure of profound sorrow that a so called “Geshe” Kelsang Gyatso and his English supporters have embarked upon a ruthless smear campaign to tarnish the International stature of His Holiness The Dalai Lama in the name of alleged “religious persecution”. It is nothing short of blasphemy in the eyes of the overwhelming majority of the six million Tibetans.

It is nothing but a crude form of debasing the Dalai Lama for his own selfish ends...We have nothing but pity for your ignorance...Why not mind his own business and do what he likes in his own bigoted kingdom?

Actions speak louder than words and we are under no illusion with whom your sympathies are despite your statements to the contrary. The Tibetans all over the world were deeply distressed by your attempt to portray the Dalai Lama as a “ruthless dictator” an “oppressor of his own people” and smash his International stature so that the Tibetan struggle will be like a rudderless ship tossing helplessly in the sea of international intrigues and treacery. From where did you borrow your vocabulary to malign the Dalai Lama? Are they not straight from the Chinese propaganda dictionary?

These days, [in Kelsang Gyatso] the demonic cloud of overwhelming arrogance displays itself with a mass of deluded pride, like a bat who thinks he is above the sky…. This demon with broken commitments…. burns with the flame of unbearable spite towards the unsurpassed omniscient 14th Dalai Lama, the only staff of life of religious people in Tibet, whose activities and kindness are equal to the sky.

...Kelsang Gyatso who is today a pariah in the Tibetan community...

We advise him to accept the fact that he is an ordinary being and stand no chance whatsoever to challenge the Dalai Lama. He is not even a Geshe. The so called “third Buddha” is a figment of imagination conjured up by his fawning desciples as a propaganda tool to attract more people to his centre and that it should not go to his head.

Kelsang himself has transgressed the eight shortcomings of relying wrongly upon his own spiritual master H.H. The Dalai Lama. According to the circular released by the Sera Jhe Tsangpa Khangtsen, to whom Kelsang belonged, he had received both sutra and tantric teachings from H.H. The Dalai Lama when he was in Tibet. He had received the fifth Dalai Lama’s Lamrim Jampel Shalung at the Norbu Linka summer palace and the Kalachakra Initiation in 1956 from H.H.The Dalai Lama which incidently was the first Kalachakra initiation by the fourteenth Dalai Lama. As it were, there is simply no question of his not being a desciple of H.H. The Dalai Lama but he has ignored this aspect and launched a blistering attack on the Dalai Lama in the name of “religious persecution” along with his gullible followers. The outcome of all this attempt to denigrate the person of the of Dalai Lama by Kelsang clearly transgressed his spiritual relationship with the Dalai Lama and though he has mentioned in his letter that “all of us are destined to go to hell”, we are in no doubt that he will infact be the one who will land in hell.

We have therefore stripped him of his membership from our Sera Jhe Dratsang since the holy scriptures have clearly prescribed to evict such apostates who will foul the Sanga community’s spiritual purity and serenity and will have a negative influence for the whole community. Owing to the above reasons contained in the holy Tantric treatises, the Sera Jhe Dratsang’s Abbot and ex-abbots, Reincarnations of holy Lamas, Geshes, and the House Masters of the fifteen different Houses unanimously decided to strip Kelsang Gyatso of his membership in the Sera Jhe Dratsang and his own House had earlier done the same.

He states that for the last eighteen years the Dalai Lama has done nothing!!! His hatred towards the Dalai Lama obscures him from seeing any merit of the Dalai Lama...It is not the fault of the holy Buddha, nor Lama Tsongkhapa nor H.H.The Dalai Lama but the beholder like Kelsang Gyatso whose demonic instinct get the better of them...He is an object of pity and nothing else.

We sincerely hope that the cult leader and his fanatical supporters go through this and think twice before their vitriolic outpourings on the holy person of the Dalai Lama. We believe you would trust the Chinese version more than ours and because of this we took the liberty to quote from the Chinese communist periodical. It would be even better if you would care to go through the whole article and you will be surprised that even the Chinese communists have far greater respect for the Dalai Lama than cult leader Kelsang Gyatso and his cultists in Cumbria, England!!! What’s more, if any one disagrees with his “pure” cult, he gets the boot...But with Kalsang anything goes, after all he is the “third buddha” in the British Isles.

His venomous invectives against the Dalai Lama is unbecoming of a Buddhist...

The sacrilege he was committing by banning the photos of the Dalai Lama and even the utterance of his name in the premises of his cult kingdom. It is an unheard piece of news which every Tibetan will condemn with the severest indiction. The motivation behind this act was, he was now planning to wean away innocent, unsuspecting, young minds towards his cultist school called the “New Kadampa Tradition” which imposes a ban on Tibet’s Spiritual and Temporal leader the Dalai Lama and thus undermine his authority even in the exile community. His single minded motivation now is to undermine the authority of the Dalai Lama and maroon the Tibetan people. This is unacceptable to the six million Tibetans and we will challenge him for this.

In his apparent ecstasy, he even disowns being a Tibetan and works against the very people where he was born.

His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas, the golden flower in the land of snows, Tibet, the form of the deity who has appeared in Tibet, the representative of Buddha Shakyamuni, the spiritual leader of all Buddhists in the world, and the great advocate of non-violence.

For those who come from the land of snow mountains, to find in His Holiness our sacred source of refuge for this and future lives is truly our inborn nature, like our eyes which give us sight and our innermost heart.

(referring to Gyatso)...Possessed by a terrible demon, without shame, embarrassment, or modesty, he doesn't have even the slightest care or concern for any of the commitments of the three vows [pratimoksha, bodhicitta, and tantric] which he undertook.

He continuously broadcasts blatantly shameless mad pronouncements, attacking with baseless slander His Holiness the Dalai Lama, whose kindness for us, the people of Tibet, has been greater that the Buddhas of the three times. These unimaginable statements which defame the name of His Holiness have created an urgent adverse situation which no Tibetan can tolerate.

Therefore, all those connected with Sera Je College, lamas and tulkus, abbots, former executives, senior and junior geshes, together with the leaders of the individual khangtsen [regional houses], all together, in agreement, with one voice, hereby proclaim that on this day, August 22, 1996, Kelsang Gyatso, the one with broken commitments and wrong view, is cast out with the "ritual nine expulsions," and is thereby banished from this place, and the being a part of the rule of our College.

This means that we request all of our brothers and sisters, the Tibetan people inside and outside Tibet, to completely sever any relationship with him. Concerning the practice of worshiping divine protectors at this Monastery in particular, the protector who was directed by the previous great masters to advise, command, and look after our Monastery is the Dharma protector Dregpa Chamsing [Dregs Pa lCam Sring). Aside from this protector there has traditionally been no worship of Dolgyal [Dorje Shugden].

These days, we keep in the honored position on the crown of our heads the instructions of our Government, the great Ganden Potrang. Therefore, all sangha who reside here, as evidence of their commitment not to worship the protector Dolgyal, have freely signed such a pledge, and offered it before the clear eye of His Holiness. Beyond that, anyone who is not blind should be able to comprehend this with their ordinary eye of understanding and mind of attachment and aversion; as they say, no one needs a lamp to make things clear in the light of the sun and moon.

For the future, we publicly make the strongest request to everyone not to associate the good name of Sera Je Monastery with this holder of broken commitments and wrong view."

Editors Note:
This web site is not affiliated with the Dalai Lama. Nor is it intended to promote the Dalai Lama. Countless respectable resources already exist supporting the Dalai Lama.

Over the last few months, there has been a surge in visits to this web site from NKT. Welcome.

Thus, it is appropriate to ask NKT to consider the words of Rimpoche Nawang Gehlek, founder of Jewel Heart, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture and Buddhism.

"When negative emotions are strong they tend to overpower you; you could never take suggestions, never be able to apply an antidote. You need time and space. First, find out if you’re willing to see whether your anger is valid or not valid. If you are not willing to see that, then take a break. Walk outside. Got to a nice place when there’s a beautiful view. Divert your attention through something neutral, like nature. In Tibet, many of my teachers liked to go up on a high mountain overlooking the valley, the river, and the mountains. They let their disturbing thoughts fly away—if they had them at all—and took in the fresh air. Certain traditions even recommend that you watch the sunset from a slightly high vantage point, stand lightly, bouncing gently on your toes. Breathe out gently three, nine, or twenty-one times, using breath as a vehicle to carry your thoughts away. Let your heavy thoughts go with the setting sun and bid them goodbye."

Make your mind a friend, not an enemy.
